多音字: Characters With More Than One Pronunciation

Characters · 8 min read · Updated August 9, 2026

多音字 (duōy B;nzì) are characters with more than one pronunciation. They are almost never random: the character carries two related but distinct meanings, and each meaning got its own sound. 行 is xíng for walking but háng for a trade, so a bank 银行 is yínháng. Several hundred exist; about fifty matter. One rule covers a lot of them: when a character is doing grammar it loses its tone — 了 is le as a particle but liǎo as a verb.

You learn that 行 is xíng, “to walk, to be OK.” Then you see 银行 and it is yínháng, a bank. You learn 长 is cháng, long. Then 长大 turns out to be zhǎngdà, to grow up.

These are 多音字 (duōy B;nzì), characters with more than one pronunciation. There are several hundred, about fifty matter constantly, and there is a pattern behind almost all of them.

The Pattern: One Character, Two Jobs

A 多音字 is almost never random. In nearly every case the character carries two related but distinct meanings, and Chinese gave each meaning its own sound — usually a different tone, sometimes a different syllable.

cháng = long (a quality) → 长城 the Great Wall, 长期 long-term
zhǎng = to grow, elder (a process or a rank) → 长大 grow up, 校长 principal

Once you see it as “which meaning is being used here?” rather than “which sound is it today?”, most of them resolve.

The Three Kinds

1. Different meaning, different sound — the honest majority

happy versus 乐 yuè music. 觉 jué to sense versus jiào sleep. These are effectively two different words that happened to be written with the same character, and they must be learned as two words.

2. Same meaning, different grammatical role — the tone shifts

jiāo (the act of teaching) versus jiào (teaching as an institution or field). 好 hǎo (good, an adjective) versus hào (to be fond of, a verb). Here the tone is doing grammatical work: a rising or level tone tends to mark the verb, a falling fourth tone tends to mark the noun. This pattern is old and quite reliable once you notice it.

3. Neutral tone versus full tone

了 as le is a grammar particle with no tone; as liǎo it is a full verb meaning to finish or to be able. Same for 着 (zhe particle versus zhuó to wear) and 的 (de particle versus in 目的, aim). When the character is doing grammar, it loses its tone. When it is doing meaning, it keeps it. That single rule covers a surprising number of cases.

How to Learn Them Without Panicking

  1. Learn the words, not the character. Do not memorise “行 = xíng or háng.” Learn 不行 bùxíng and 银行 yínháng as two separate vocabulary items and the readings arrive attached to a context.
  2. Ask which meaning is active. 长 in a word about size is cháng; in a word about growing or seniority it is zhǎng. The meaning picks the sound, not the other way round.
  3. Use the grammar-loses-tone rule. If the character is functioning as a particle, expect the neutral toneless reading.
  4. Accept that a handful are simply arbitrary. 大夫 dàifu (doctor) has no logic you can derive. Learn the word and move on.
  5. Read. Context resolves 多音字 automatically and permanently in a way that no list can. 银行 in a sentence about money never gets read xíng twice.

Why This Is Not as Bad as It Sounds

English does exactly the same thing and nobody finds it remarkable: read (present) and read (past), lead the verb and lead the metal, record the noun and record the verb, live in both senses. Native English speakers resolve these instantly from context without ever having studied a rule.

The difference is that you already have thousands of hours of English context and almost none in Chinese. That gap closes with reading, which is the same reason 多音字 stop being a problem for learners at roughly the same point that spoken Chinese starts resolving itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is a duoyinzi (多音字)?

A Chinese character with more than one pronunciation, usually because it carries two related but distinct meanings and each meaning received its own sound. 行 is xíng when it means to walk or to be OK, and háng when it means a row or a trade, as in 银行 yínháng, a bank.

How many Chinese characters have multiple pronunciations?

Several hundred are documented, but only around fifty appear often enough to matter in everyday Chinese. The most common include 行, 长, 还, 得, 了, 为, 教, 重, 觉, 差, 乐, 好, 少 and 着.

How do I know which pronunciation to use?

Ask which meaning is active rather than which sound is correct. 长 in a word about length is cháng, and in a word about growing or seniority it is zhǎng. A useful secondary rule is that when a character is doing grammatical work it loses its tone, so 了 is the toneless particle le but the full verb liǎo.

Why is 银行 pronounced yínháng and not yínxíng?

Because 行 there means a row or a line of business, not walking. A bank is literally a silver trade, so the character takes its háng reading. The same háng appears in 行业 hángyè, industry, and 同行 tóngháng, someone in the same trade.

Is 多音字 unique to Chinese?

No. English does the same thing with read in the present and past, lead as a verb and as a metal, and record as a noun and a verb. Native speakers resolve these from context without any rule, and Chinese learners reach the same point through reading.
