就 jiù = sooner, earlier, easier than expected. 才 cái = later, harder, less than expected. 他七点就来了 — he came at seven already. 他十点才来 — he didn't come until ten. Notice the trap: 就 takes 了, 才 doesn't.
Dictionaries translate both words with a list: then, just, only, as early as, not until, exactly… Learners read that list, conclude the words are vague, and avoid them. That is a shame, because 就 and 才 are among the most precise words in Chinese. They do not describe what happened. They describe how the speaker feels about when it happened.
The one picture
Every use of these two words is this picture. The line in the middle is an expectation — a time, an amount, a difficulty. 就 says reality arrived before it; 才 says it arrived after it.
Same event, opposite feeling
✓ 他七点就来了。 ✗
✓ 他十点才来。 ✗
One way to feel it: 了 announces it's done, a change has happened, which fits the quick, already-finished feeling of 就. 才 dwells on how long the wait was, and 了 would close that off too neatly. The full story of 了 is in 了 explained.
才 + a number: “only”
Before a number or amount, 才 means only — less than you would think. Same picture: the amount falls short of the expectation.
The first sentence uses both words at once — only twenty (才) and already a manager (就) — which is exactly how natives express surprise at someone's early success.
The four paired patterns
At HSK 3, 就 and 才 start appearing as the second half of two-part sentences. The same picture tells you which one each pattern needs.
一…就The second event follows the first with no gap — sooner than anyone would expect, so 就.
These two look almost identical and are tested constantly. The picture decides: an easy, sufficient condition gets 就; a demanding, necessary condition gets 才.
Mixing them (只要…才, 只有…就) is a standard wrong option in HSK grammar questions. Remember: 要 is easy, 有 is hard.
Here 就 simply means then — the result follows directly from the condition. The same then appears alone in replies: 那我就不去了 then I won't go.
就 has two more everyday jobs
| Meaning | Example | Pinyin & English |
|---|---|---|
| exactly, precisely | 就是他! | jiù shì tā — That's him! (the very one) |
| right (here), just | 我家就在学校旁边。 | wǒ jiā jiù zài xuéxiào pángbiān — My home is right next to the school. |
And 才 has one: only just, something that happened a moment ago — 我才知道 wǒ cái zhīdào, I only just found out. It is the 才 inside 刚才 gāngcái, just now.
Check yourself — 就 or 才?
Think: earlier or later than expected?
Later than expected → 才 (and no 了).
一…就 = as soon as.
才 in a past-time sentence normally takes no 了: 他十一点才睡. (就 would need 了: 他十一点就睡了.)
A necessary condition with 才 → 只有…才.
才 + amount = only (less than expected).
只要…就 — the condition is enough.
