听 vs 听到 vs 听懂: Why Chinese Verbs Need an Ending

Grammar · HSK 2–3 · 5 min read · Published October 3, 2026

The short version: Many Chinese verbs describe only the attempt. 听 tīng is listen, 找 zhǎo is look for. To say the attempt succeeded, add a result: 听到 hear, 听懂 understand, 找到 find, 看完 finish reading. A failed result is negated with 没: 我没听懂. To say you can't, put 不 in the middle: 我听不懂.

Level: HSK 2–3. Result complements such as 看见, 听懂, 找到 and 做完 appear from HSK 2, and the potential form (听得懂 / 听不懂) is core HSK 3 grammar. Every example has characters, pinyin with tone marks and English.

English has separate verbs for trying and succeeding: you look for your keys and then you find them, you listen and then you understand. Chinese builds the second verb out of the first. It keeps the action and adds a small syllable that reports the outcome. This is why a learner who knows 听 still cannot say “I didn't understand” correctly until they learn the ending.

One action, three outcomes

听tīnglisten. The action itself, which may or may not succeed.
听到tīngdàohear. The sound reached you.
听懂tīngdǒngunderstand. You followed the meaning.
我在听音乐。
wǒ zài tīng yīnyuè
I'm listening to music.
你听到了吗?外面有声音。
nǐ tīngdào le ma? wàimiàn yǒu shēngyīn
Did you hear that? There's a noise outside.
老师说得太快,我没听懂。
lǎoshī shuō de tài kuài, wǒ méi tīngdǒng
The teacher spoke too fast, and I didn't understand.
我听了,可是没听懂。
wǒ tīng le, kěshì méi tīngdǒng
I listened, but I didn't understand.

The last sentence is impossible to say with 听 alone. It needs both halves: the attempt (听了) and the missing result (没听懂). The same split appears with looking and searching:

我找了半天,还没找到。
wǒ zhǎole bàntiān, hái méi zhǎodào
I've been looking for ages and still haven't found it.
你看见我的手机了吗?
nǐ kànjiàn wǒ de shǒujī le ma
Have you seen my phone?
这本书我看了,但是没看懂。
zhè běn shū wǒ kàn le, dànshì méi kàndǒng
I read this book, but I didn't understand it.

到 or 见? After 看 and 听, they are almost interchangeable: 看见 and 看到 both mean see. 见 only attaches to verbs of perception, while 到 is the general “got there” ending that also gives you 找到, 买到, 收到 and 想到 (think of).

Saying it didn't happen: 没, not 不

A verb with a result reports an outcome, so the negative reports that the outcome did not happen. Chinese uses 没 for that.

Wrong
我不听懂。
Right
我没听懂。
wǒ méi tīngdǒng
I didn't understand.
Wrong
我不找到我的钥匙。
Right
我没找到我的钥匙。
wǒ méi zhǎodào wǒ de yàoshi
I didn't find my keys.

Questions follow the same logic. Ask 你找到了吗? or 找到了没有?, and answer 找到了 (found it) or 没找到 (didn't find it).

Can and can't: 听得懂 and 听不懂

Put 得 (de) or 不 (bu, neutral tone) between the verb and the result, and the sentence talks about ability instead of what happened.

我听不懂广东话。
wǒ tīng bu dǒng Guǎngdōnghuà
I can't understand Cantonese.
菜太多了,我吃不完。
cài tài duō le, wǒ chī bu wán
There's too much food. I can't finish it.
我找不到我的钥匙。
wǒ zhǎo bu dào wǒ de yàoshi
I can't find my keys.
后面的人看得见吗?
hòumiàn de rén kàn de jiàn ma
Can the people at the back see?

没听懂: this time

对不起,我没听懂。duìbuqǐ, wǒ méi tīngdǒng
Sorry, I didn't catch that.
It happened once. Asking for a repeat makes sense.

听不懂: not able

我听不懂上海话。wǒ tīng bu dǒng Shànghǎihuà
I can't understand Shanghainese.
A limit of ability. Repeating will not help.
Where 了 and the object go. Both follow the result, never come between the verb and the result.
✓ 我已经看完了那本书。 / 那本书我已经看完了。
✗ 我看那本书完了。
The verb and its result behave like one word.
懂
Learn verbs with their endings. In Hanzijo every word arrives with example sentences and native audio, so 听 comes with 听懂 and 听不懂 rather than alone. The listening and dictation tracks are built for exactly this moment, turning 听不懂 into 听得懂, and the 7-stage SRS keeps the pairs from slipping.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 听, 听到 and 听懂?

听 (tīng) is the action of listening. 听到 or 听见 means the sound reached you: you heard it. 听懂 means you understood it. 我听了,可是没听懂: I listened, but I didn't understand.

Why is it 没听懂 and not 不听懂?

A verb with a result describes something that either happened or did not. 没 negates things that did not happen, so 没听懂 is correct. 不 belongs inside the potential form: 听不懂, cannot understand.

What is the difference between 没听懂 and 听不懂?

我没听懂 means I didn't understand that particular time, so you might ask the speaker to repeat. 我听不懂 means I am not able to understand, for example a language you have not learned: 我听不懂广东话.

What is the difference between 看见 and 看到?

With 看 and 听, 见 and 到 are almost interchangeable: 看见 and 看到 both mean see. 见 attaches only to perception verbs, while 到 is much broader: 找到 (find), 买到 (manage to buy), 收到 (receive).

Where does 了 go with a result complement?

After the complement: 我看完了, 我找到了. The object also follows the complement: 我看完了那本书, never 我看那本书完了.
