Chinese Convenience Store Phrases: What the Clerk Says, and the Two Answers You Need

Speaking · HSK 1–2 · 6 min read · Published October 5, 2026

The short version: a Chinese convenience store clerk asks the same few questions in the same order: heat it (需要加热吗?), a bag (要袋子吗?), membership (有会员吗?), how you are paying (微信还是支付宝?) and the receipt (要小票吗?). Two answers cover almost all of them: 要,谢谢 yào, xièxie (yes, please) and 不用了,谢谢 búyòng le, xièxie (no need, thanks).

Level: HSK 1–2. Every word you need to say here is first-level Chinese. The clerk's questions are short too; the challenge is catching them at speed. Every line has characters, pinyin with tone marks and English.

You have a bento box, a bottle of iced tea and a steamed bun. You have practised 多少钱?. Then the clerk says something quickly, looks at you and waits.

The good news is that this is less a conversation than a script, and it is almost the same at every FamilyMart, Lawson and 7-Eleven in the country. Learn the lines in advance and the only thing left is to choose between two answers.

The two answers that cover almost everything

Yes, please

要,谢谢yào, xièxie
For heating, a bag, chopsticks or a straw. With a number: 要一个, one please.

No, thanks

不用了,谢谢búyòng le, xièxie
“No need, thanks.” Soft and completely polite.
Avoid a bare 不要. 不要 on its own sounds like “No. Don't want it.”, which is fine for a pushy street seller but sharp at a till. 不用了 means there is no need, which is exactly the meaning you want. The full story is in 要 vs 想 in Chinese.

The eight lines, in the order you will hear them

1 · As you walk in
They say
欢迎光临!
huānyíng guānglín
Welcome!
You say

Nothing. Often it is not even the clerk speaking but a recorded voice set off by the door.

2 · Hot food
They say
需要加热吗?
xūyào jiārè ma?
Shall I heat it up?
要热一下吗?
yào rè yíxià ma?
Want it warmed up? (same question, more casual)
You say
要,谢谢。
yào, xièxie
Yes, please.
不用了,谢谢。
búyòng le, xièxie
No, thanks.
加热 means to heat. Unlike in Korea, where you usually use the microwave yourself, in a Chinese convenience store the clerk normally heats bento boxes and buns for you behind the counter.
3 · A bag
They say
要袋子吗?
yào dàizi ma?
Do you want a bag?
You say
要一个。
yào yí ge
One, please.
不用了。
búyòng le
No need.
Shops in China have had to charge for plastic bags since 2008, which is why the clerk asks. The charge is added to your total.
4 · Chopsticks, spoon, straw
They say
要筷子吗?
yào kuàizi ma?
Do you need chopsticks?
要勺子吗?/ 要吸管吗?
yào sháozi ma? / yào xīguǎn ma?
A spoon? / A straw?
You say
要,谢谢。
yào, xièxie
Yes, please.
不用了。
búyòng le
No need.
5 · Membership
They say
有会员吗?
yǒu huìyuán ma?
Are you a member?
You say
没有。
méiyǒu
No.
Most chains run their loyalty schemes inside WeChat or Alipay. You can ignore them; 没有 ends the question.
6 · The total
They say
一共二十八块五。
yígòng èrshíbā kuài wǔ
That's 28.50 in total.
You say

Nothing yet: the payment question comes next.

块 kuài is the spoken word for yuan (written 元). A number after 块 counts tenths, called 毛 máo, so 二十八块五 is 28.5 yuan. Numbers are covered in Chinese numbers 1–100.
7 · Paying
They say
微信还是支付宝?
Wēixìn háishi Zhīfùbǎo?
WeChat Pay or Alipay?
请出示付款码。
qǐng chūshì fùkuǎnmǎ
Please show your payment code.

You say
支付宝。
Zhīfùbǎo
Alipay.
可以用现金吗?
kěyǐ yòng xiànjīn ma?
Can I pay cash?
8 · Receipt and goodbye
They say
要小票吗?
yào xiǎopiào ma?
Do you want the receipt?
慢走。/ 欢迎下次光临。
màn zǒu / huānyíng xiàcì guānglín
Take care. / Please come again.
You say
不用了,谢谢。
búyòng le, xièxie
No, thanks.
谢谢,拜拜。
xièxie, bāibāi
Thanks, bye.
慢走, literally “walk slowly”, is how shopkeepers and hosts say goodbye. More ways to leave are in how to say goodbye in Chinese.

Paying by phone: who scans whom

Almost everyone in China pays with WeChat Pay or Alipay, and there are two ways it can go. The clerk's words tell you which one.

They scan you

付款码fùkuǎnmǎ, payment code
You open the barcode in your app and hold it out; the clerk scans it. Prompt: 请出示付款码.

You scan them

收款码shōukuǎnmǎ, the shop's code
You scan the QR code on the counter and type in the amount. Prompt: 扫这里, or 扫码.
付 is to pay, 收 is to receive. 付款码 is the code for paying, so it lives in your phone; 收款码 is the code for receiving money, so it belongs to the shop. Since 2023, both apps accept many foreign Visa and Mastercard cards, so visitors can set them up before the trip. Cash (现金) is still legal tender, and shops are required to accept it.

Three things you may need to ask

有热水吗?
yǒu rèshuǐ ma?
Is there hot water? (for instant noodles)
能帮我热一下吗?
néng bāng wǒ rè yíxià ma?
Could you heat this for me?
有充电宝吗?
yǒu chōngdiànbǎo ma?
Do you have power banks? (to rent)

Shared power banks (共享充电宝) are rented from machines in shops and restaurants and paid for with a phone app. The 一下 in 热一下 softens the request, the same way 看看 and 等一下 do; see doubling verbs in Chinese.

Practise it by ear. The free convenience store and bubble tea simulator reads every clerk line in this guide aloud and asks you to choose the reply. Turn on listening mode to hide the characters until you answer.
便
Train your ear for the fast version. Clerks say these lines quickly, and 要袋子吗 can sound like one word. Hanzijo's dictation lessons have you write down short spoken Chinese exactly as you hear it, the tone trainer sharpens your ear for 要 yào versus 有 yǒu, and the OCR scanner reads a real receipt or price tag for you.

Pick the answer you would give.

1
要袋子吗?
You don't need a bag.

不用了,谢谢 is the polite no. A bare 不要 sounds blunt.

2
需要加热吗?
You want your bento warm.

Answer a 要 question with 要.

3
有会员吗?
You are not a member.

A 有 question is answered with 没有.

4
一共十五块五。
How much is it?

The 五 after 块 means five 毛: 15.5 yuan.

5
请出示付款码。
What should you do?

付款码 is your payment code; the clerk scans it.

6
You want hot water for your cup noodles.

热水 is hot water.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Chinese convenience store clerk say?

The usual order is 欢迎光临 (welcome), 需要加热吗? (shall I heat it?), 要袋子吗? (do you want a bag?), 有会员吗? (are you a member?), the total such as 一共二十八块五, 微信还是支付宝? (WeChat or Alipay?), 要小票吗? (receipt?) and 慢走 (take care).

How do you say I don't need a bag in Chinese?

Say 不用了,谢谢 (búyòng le, xièxie). It is the polite way to decline anything a clerk offers. A bare 不要 sounds like a flat refusal.

Can foreigners use Alipay or WeChat Pay in China?

Yes. Since 2023 both apps let visitors link many foreign Visa and Mastercard cards. At the till, either show your payment code (付款码) for the clerk to scan or scan the shop's code (收款码).

Can I pay with cash at a Chinese convenience store?

Yes. Cash (现金) is legal tender and shops are required to accept it, although most customers pay by phone. Ask 可以用现金吗? if you are unsure.

What does 一共二十八块五 mean?

It means 'that's 28.50 yuan in total'. 块 is the everyday word for yuan, and the 五 at the end stands for five 毛 (tenths of a yuan), so it is 28.5 yuan.
